Fight in the Square
Despite Beau’s attempts to reason with the Pumpkin Heads, they immediately attack. The party try to keep in mind what William said when driving off, warning them not to kill the Pumpkin Heads. In the main square they knock out four.
Zora fills up a bucket of water and in an attempt to play firefighter angers more inside. They attack, and with each strike stun their victims. The party become injured and frustrated, resulting in two pumpkin heads being outright killed.
Osiera comes out of her wild shape, says “This is fucked” then grapples the Pumpkin heads with vines.
Grimm knocks two out before rushing to Zora, but the Pumpkin has other ideas and stabs him with a pitchfork pulling him back.
Beau casts a malediction of rot.
Eleana throws away a spell slot for magic missile.
Jiwho conjures a great elk to tank damage.
Grimm gets big mad and attacks the guy who pulled him back in.
The scarecrows try to attack but the vines are holding tight.
Osiera casts pins and needles.
Beau casts Eldritch blast.
The pumpkin head is still just wailing on Grimm, who at this point is looking rough.
Eleana whiffs a magic missile again.
Zora is getting pissed and uses divine smite, thoroughly fucking them up.
Jiwho casts sacred flame and further fucks them up. His elk gets stunned.
The pumpkin head tries to stab Zora but misses again, dropping its pitchfork.
Grimm gets even bigger mad and attacks, managing to not get stunned. He does however look very bloody.
Osiera casts healing word on Grimm. She also casts pins and needles again but it misses.
Beau aims an eldritch blast at the pumpkin breathing in Grimms face and pops its head right off, splattering pumpkin guts all over Grimm.
There are two pumpkin heads remaining. One attacks the elk.
Eleana is getting pissed off and desperate. She throws a fiery burst of sorcerer energy at one of them, wounding it severely. It screeches out as it starts catching fire.
Zora keeps wailing on the one closest to her and decides to kill it outright.
Grimm knocks the last one out.
Z: I’m trying to save you!
G: Wayyy to go zora!
Z: (frustrated) I'm just trying to
help!
(she immediately gets stunned)
E: Fuck ‘em up!
J: Let’s not fight these fires and go find the windmill that’s launching fire into town.
The Windmill
Z: Woe to those who reject my help!
Z: Great Job Beau, Excellent execution!
As the party approached the city they saw a blazing windmill that was spitting fireballs at the village. The mechanism on the inside is going haywire.
Zora puts her hand on Grimms back and says “Good job Grimm”, healing him.
Jiwho stays behind and brings out Snafu instructing him to put out the fires. Snafu stares at Jiwho and then points to the burning building where he see’s that villagers have begun emerging and are now fighting the fires. He tells Snafu to stay back.
As they head towards the windmill that is spinning rapidly out of control they hear the sounds of buildings collapse behind them accompanied with awful screams. As they approach they see cinders being thrown all around. A portion of the wall above the door has collapsed and is blocking the entrance. Inside they hear a woman yelling “Please! Someone! Come help!”
Grimm smashes the door with his maul while Eleana puts out the fire Infront of it with a bucket of water. A woman runs out with horror on her face. She stares at them and says “Please! Please, you need to help him! You need to help Jonah! I’ll go get the rest but you need to save him. He’s stuck at the top.”
On the first floor they see massive crates lining the walls and a spiral staircase going up. They also see a burning trapdoor that goes down. They follow the lady’s instructions and head upstairs to help whoever
is up there. The second floor is engulfed in flames. The entire building begins to shake
and groan, threatening to crash down.
Above they hear, “Honey! Honey please! Come on, you’re my
baby girl. You gotta run with daddy! Please! Change back!
AAHHH! No! Please!”
The party all run in with the exception of Beauregard. He takes a cigarette out of his pocket, lights it on the burning pile of rubble and takes a few steps away, waiting for the party to return.
Eleana misty steps to the top of the stairs past the fire and lands on the third floor. Above she hears the pumpkin lashing out at Jonah while he cries out.
Zora thinks about destroying the windmill’s spinning mechanism and starts scraping out the fire with her shield, clearing a path to hit it. The building groans.
The Precipice
bagman
O: Does it sound like my sister?
DM: No, it does not.
O: Great! Guys, false alarm. We’re
good. Let’s get out of here
B: Why did those psychopaths run into a burning building?
Z: Ok guys, don’t bring the building down! Novel insight from
your local neighborhood paladin.
O: Oh god
E: You’re not gonna like how we help!
Outside, Beau looks up and notices that every time the windmill blades rotate, the whole building flings itself to the left. He knows that the it will only hold for another minute. He scratches a note that says “Building’s coming down”, straps it to Quaker and sends him inside. Osiera spots this, reads the note and relays that to everyone inside.
Zora has a million ideas running through her head on how to get everyone out safely. She see’s the hole that Osiera fell into, takes out her warhammer and destroys it, leaving a hold big enough for someone to jump through.
Zora: ”UHH, guys! I made a hole!
She then jumps through the hole and falls on her ass.
Zora: ”Guys! Aim for the hay!!! Don’t land on me.
Osiera see’s Zora do that and opts to take the stairs instead. She walks to the door and see’s Beau standing there.
Osiera: “What the fuck man?”
Jonah is hysterical. They look at Foxwillow and see most of the fires have been put out by now. The woman from before runs up crying and looks to Jonah. She says, ”Jonah, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have hit you. I wasn’t ready to handle what you said. I understand why you said it, and I’m going to try everything in my path to maybe see if she’ll change.“ He turns to her and apologizes as well, “ I’m very sorry. I shouldn’t have insulted Adalaid. It wasn’t— It wasn’t something that was kind. Especially with the fact that your daughter Rosemary has been missing for over a week now. “ They all hear, from in the distance, pumpkin heads in town falling to the ground one by one.
Jonah: (to the party) “ Anyways, can you let my daughter out of there please?”
Osiera: “Here we go.”
Zora: “Let’s take a look.”
Eleana: “Euhhh..”
Grimm opens the bag and reaches in grabbing her hand. The bag man is grappling her, holding her back. Grimm yanks and pulls harder. The bag man screeches inside.
Osiera: “Why isn’t she coming out man?”
Jiwho: “Sometimes you gotta use both hands”
Grimm: “DON’T MAKE ME COME IN THERE” (He yells with his face in the bag)
Grimm hears a tearing noise from inside and the death rattle of someone’s final breaths. Grimm pulls out an arm, waves it at Jonah and tosses it as his feet, saying “I can get the rest to you later.” The party is speechless. Several people gasp.
Beau: “What the hell did y’all get off into in there?”
Osiera: “What the fuck?”
Beau: “What the fuck happened?”
Grimm reaches in for another hand and pulls it out along with pumpkin guts.
Jonah stares in horror at the arm and guts at his feet. He stares at each and every
person and before leaving says with held breath, “I need to get back to the shop.”
O: “okay, you gotta stop. You gotta stop.
Z: “Grimm….”
The party is speechless for a few moments.
Osiera: “We’ve mad an enemy”
Zora: “Why was she in the bag? What happened up there?”
Grimm: “I threw her in the bag”
Zora: “Why would you pu— THERE’S A BAGMAN!”
Grimm: “Well, she wasn’t getting knocked out and he wasn’t coming, so… I took chances.”
Eleana: “I have a perfectly good bag of holding right here that doesn’t have a FUCKING BAGMAN IN IT!”
Grimm: “Well that would have been cool five minutes ago! Next time, you hold the bag!”
Osiera is pacing, “This is so bad guys. This is so bad.”
Zora: “Beau, do you have a cigarette?”
Beau: “Yeah, I got plenty.”
Osiera pulls dried tobacco out of her hair and rolls herself a cigarette too. Eleana walks to a crumbled brick wall and slumps to the ground. Grimm grabs his waterskin full of ale and starts drinking.
Osiera: “Guys… What the fuck was that?”
Beau: “That’s what I’m curious about. What the hell did y’all get off into?”
Eleana: (pointed to Beau) "Well you would know if you came in!”
Beau: “OH!! I’m sorry that I wasn’t batshit crazy enough to go into a burning building!”
Zora walks over to Eleana and extends her hand, "Let’s get out of here before the whole thing comes down.” Eleana gets up grumpily and under her breath says “We need to kill the bagman.”
Grimm: “Listen! Don’t mess with the bagman and he won’t mess with you!”
Zora: “WE DIDN’T MESS WITH THE— YOU FED HIM!!!!”
Grimm: “We can always say it was his fault.”
Eleana storms off. Grimm shouts at her “YOU WERE TRYING TO KILL HER IN THE FIRST PLACE.”
Osiera: “This is so fucked up! What is Jonah gonna tell everyone? Did we even help? Did we even do any good here?”
J: I think with Eleana’s persuasion, she just needs to make sure he’s aware it was his own damned fault.
DM: She really convinced that guy to beat his daughter.
E: Not kill her, just knock her out
O: So that we could give the bagman a snack
Beau: I can fix this guys, don’t you worry. I can resolve this situation.
(Eleana shoots daggers at Beau)
(He does not give a fuck)
Osiera runs through the fire, assesses her surroundings and blesses Eleana and jiwho. Grimm runs through the fire and jumps up the stairs. he dashes past Eleana and reaches the staircase leading to the top. Jiwho tries to jump over the fire and land on the stairs. His jump, however, isn’t powerful enough to clear the stairs entirely without taking damage. He uses his momentum to pull himself to the top with his elbows.
Beau is still enjoying his cigarette outside
B: MMmm, really good cigarette
Eleana takes her waterskin out of her bag and douses the fire directly infront of her. She tries to make it to the ladder but Grimm is blocking her path so she waits on the platform. Zora debates smashing through the wall, knocking on it to test its sturdiness. She decides that wont work and calls up asking if there is a window above, which there isn’t. She looks to Osiera and douses some flames with her holy water. Osiera looks back and runs up to join the other half of the party. Looking up she see’s Jonah hugging the pumpkin. He yells down to the party “Please! Please! You’ve gotta help my daughter!”.
O: What the fuck are we doing? If this is gonna burn down, like, how are we gonna get out? What are— What are we doing??"
Grimm looks around for alcohol and finds a hoard, he throws bagman a bottle of whiskey. Jiwho looks around the inn and stumbles across a loose floorboard behind the counter. Prying it open he finds a sack filled with likely embezzled money. On top is a single black coin with a feather on its face. He tries to get a better look at it but, when he picks it up, it crumbles in his hand and turns into corn kernels. In his head he hears, “WHAT MOTHER DOESN’T KNOW WON’T HURT HER. I’LL PAY HER BACK SOMEDAY.”
Everyone is drinking as the town goes quiet and still for the night, except for a strange whistle coming from outside. Osiera knocks back her whiskey and walks to the window to peek through a gap in the wood. She spots a girl standing in the center of town with a wide smile who stares in their direction. As soon as she makes eye contact she puts her back to the wall and slinks down, “We’re not going out tonight. We’re not going outside. I think someone needs to keep watch.”
She tells the group what she saw and they all take a peek outside. Now she is skipping, and singing a song. She skips off towards the cornfields.
round and round the mullberry bush the crows will chase the people inside the cornfield lies ope that's a secret
round and round the mullberry bush the crows will chase the people inside the cornfield lies ope that's a secret
A record starts singing in the tavern. Beau slams back a whiskey and says, “God, I miss Faerun.” Jiwho talks to snafu. Eleana drinks gin and takes another aspirin, feeling a little bit better. They go to sleep.
Grimm climbs to the top and meets Jonah and the Pumpkin head. The man says “Please. Please, you have to help Liza. I don’t know what the hell she’s turned into. She keeps hitting me.” Grimm wants to put the pumpkin head inside of his bag of holding and attempts to grapple her, shifting her attention to Grimm. Before Eleana goes up the ladder she turns around taking in her surroundings and asks “has anyone seen Beau?” Jiwho responds “he’s scampering around somewhere”. Outside, Beau flicks out his cigarette and decides to peek inside, finds it too warm, and goes back outside to wait. Eleana lands at the top with Grimm finding herself in a precarious position. She casts chill touch on the pumpkin and moves to the side for Jiwho.
Still downstairs, Zora and Osiera realize they can’t all go to the top. Zora again contemplates wedging a weapon in the spinning platform but decides to yell up to the rest “If you can toss me someone I can drag them to safety”. Osiera jumps back down into Zora’s arms avoiding the rising fire. She runs across the flaming room as wood cracks and breaks around her. Despite taking it slow and walking carefully, the floorboard breaks underneath her. She starts panicking knowing the building could come down any second.
Grimm: “Fuck this”
Jonah: “No Please! Please help my daughter!”
Grimm: “Too Late”
Eleana: (to Jonah) “It’s okay! We just have to knock her out. She’s not gonna die. We’ll save you guys!”
Grimm is locked in, barely managing to dodge a stun from the pumpkin. She stabs Grimm with her pitchfork and pushes him nearly off the edge. Jiwho finally gets to the top and raises his hand preparing to cast moonbeam on the pumpkin. The man yells, ”NO! NOOOOO! PLEASE DON’T KILL MY DAUGHTER! PLEASE! I SWEAR I’LL DO ANYTHING!” Jiwho thinks better of it and instead turns to Grimm, preparing to help push her into the bag.
Eleana quickens a spell and casts fire at the pumpkin, missing.
Jonah: “What the hell are you doing?”
Eleana: “We have to knock her out! We’ll get you out!”
Jonah: “That’s fair! But do you have to burn her alive?”
Eleana casts the fire again. Jonah pulls out a mace, staring at Eleana and preparing to club her.
Eleana: “Listen to me man! We’ve got to knock her out!”
Jonah: (to his daughter with tears in his eye) ”I’m sorry”
He takes his mace and clubs Liza over the head twice.
Grimm tries to put Liza in the bag again, this time with Jiwho’s help. The pumpkin tries to attack her dad but misses and catches her arms on fire. As she’s screaming Jiwho opens the bag and Grimm shoves her in. She tries to resist but bagman’s hands reach up and drag her in.
Jonah: “What did you do?”
Jiwho: “Shut up! Start running!”
Jiwho heals Jonah and Grimm. They all run out of the burning building and make it just in time.
Reckoning
The Village is destroyed
Walking into town they run into the woman from before, Martha. She looks toward everyone and says, "listen, I know that got heated, and I understand that Jonah is most likely very upset. but there's not much that can be done. To my knowledge all residents but myself, Jonah, William and maybe two or three others are left. My children, Isaac and Adelaide haven't been seen tonight and as you heard my daughter Rosemary's been gone for a little over a week now. Everyone else that vanished seems to have been replaced by these strange scarecrows. The others that are still around went back and locked themselves in their house now that the fire has been mostly contained. If you all need a place to stay or need info about town, come to the Hooded Lantern. It's my son's inn. There's beds and drink for you there. please."
During this conversation they hear a loud crash as the entirety of the windmill comes down. They walk across town and can see Jonah staring at them from the glass window of his shop. He’s standing behind the counter butchering away.
Osiera: "Guys, should we be concerned that we essentially just murdered his daughter?
He stares out the window as he takes off his apron, heads into the backroom, and closes the door.
They head to the inn and are told to help themselves. They thank and apologize to Martha.
Martha: Listen, me and Jonah have been at odds for quite some time now. You see, ever since Jerimiah Sticks vanished everyone has turned against each other. Even my daughter has been — well, different lately. Almost as if there’s a strange look in her eye.”
The Hooded Lantern
